Episode 5 Overview: “In the Name of the Mother”
Episode 5 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is titled “In the Name of the Mother.” Duncan originally only wanted to prepare for the knight tournament, but now he must face the consequences of his attack on Aerion Targaryen.
Aerion demanded a trial by the Seven, which takes place in this episode. Seven champions chosen by Duncan face seven champions of Aerion. A big twist from the previous episode: Crown Prince Baelor fights for Duncan.
The episode mainly focuses on this intense trial. Here’s a summary of the most important events.
A Brutal and Chaotic Battle
From Duncan’s point of view, the battle is fierce and messy. Knights charge at each other, each looking for their opponent:
- Duncan panics at the start and is hit hard by Aerion’s lance.
- He pulls the lance from his body, but then is struck by Aerion’s morning star and faints.
- While unconscious, Duncan remembers his childhood and how he joined Ser Arlan of Pennytree, including the loss of a childhood friend.
- Duncan wakes up lying in the mud, and the fight with Aerion continues.
- Both knights injure each other, and Duncan falls again.
- In the final moments, Duncan rises just before the end of the trial.
- The crowd cheers as Duncan charges at Aerion, throwing him to the ground and beating him with his shield and fists.
- Duncan does not kill Aerion but forces him to surrender. The trial by the Seven ends with Duncan’s victory.
The Outcome for Both Teams
Even though Duncan wins, the results are costly:
- On Duncan’s side:
- Ser Humfrey Beesbury is killed by Ser Donnel of Dämmerthal.
- Ser Humfrey Hardyng also dies during the trial.
- On Aerion’s side:
- All champions survive.
The biggest shock comes with the death of Prince Baelor Targaryen, who is struck in the back of the head by his younger brother Maekar’s club. Baelor dies in Duncan’s arms as the episode ends.
Since Baelor was the eldest son of King Daeron II Targaryen, his death makes Aerys I Targaryen (not yet seen in the series) the new heir to the throne.
