Dark Winds’ Season 4 Premiere: How Linda Hamilton’s Surprise Cameo Happened

The latest season of the hit AMC drama welcomed Linda Hamilton in a surprising cameo, bringing her into the story from The Upside Down.

Linda Hamilton’s Surprise Cameo in Dark Winds Season 4

When it comes to cameos, Dark Winds has delivered some memorable moments before — like executive producers Robert Redford and George R.R. Martin playing chess in Season 3. But the Season 4 premiere of the Navajo Tribal Police series brings its own star power. Linda Hamilton appears as the wife of retired sheriff Gordo Sena (A Martinez), in a storyline that is very personal for showrunner John Wirth.

Wirth and his wife lost their home in the Palisades Fire in January 2025, along with the physical memories of their life there. “I wanted to write about loss,” he told Gold Derby. By having Gordo’s wife struggle with dementia and Gordo face the erasure of their shared past, Wirth explored the feelings he experienced in real life.

How Hamilton Joined the Show

When AMC casting director Marc Hirschfeld suggested Hamilton for the role, Wirth was thrilled but assumed it would be impossible to get the Terminator star, who was recently seen in the final season of Stranger Things. He adjusted the script with Hamilton in mind and sent it to her.

“Next thing I know, she’s on board,” Wirth said. He also noted that sharing a scene with series star Zahn McClarnon was meaningful for Hamilton. The two had previously appeared in the 1994 thriller Silent Fall, though they had no shared scenes. McClarnon recalled jokingly: “Back then we didn’t have cellphones, so we took a Polaroid of me picking Linda up in my arms. We reenacted the picture with me holding her.”

Joe Leaphorn’s Personal Struggles

Season 4 also explores the personal journey of Joe Leaphorn (McClarnon). His wife, nurse Emma (Deanna Allison), has left the reservation to work in Los Angeles, which brings him midseason into a new setting. In her absence, Joe considers retiring from the Navajo Tribal Police and often retreats to his sweat lodge to seek clarity.

“He’s searching for a spiritual connection, known in Navajo culture as Hózhó, which means balance or peace of mind,” McClarnon explained. “Joe faces big questions: Should he retire? How does he keep the woman he loves? Is he changing to show Emma he’s changed, or because he realizes he needs to fix himself?”

Introducing Season 4’s Villain

Complicating Leaphorn’s journey is Season 4’s main antagonist, Irene Vaggan, a German gun-for-hire played by Franka Potente. Vaggan has a 16-year-old runaway, Isabel DeRoy-Olson, in her sights.

In the original Tony Hillerman novel The Ghostway, Vaggan is a tall blond male. Wirth decided to make her a woman for the show, creating a new backstory involving her Nazi grandfather, played by Udo Kier in the actor’s final performance. This change also helped distinguish Vaggan from the villain Colton Wolf in Season 2.
